Additions to the SketchUp SVG Outline Plugin

November 11th, 2009

dragonfly_silhouette_100I’ve been working hard to add some more functionality to the SketchUp SVG outline plugin.

The latest version is 0.99 (download here). The following functionality has been added:

Exporting text annotations

Changing line colours and width

Launching your SVG editor from SketchUp

Now to pull all of the documentation together and create a decent help system for the plugin…

Running Your SVG Editor from SketchUp

November 11th, 2009

darth-inkscape-sketchup

The last little tidbit that I’ve added to SVG exporting from SketchUp is the ability to have an SVG editor load your file once an export has completed. This should save you a few seconds and is really good with iterative work where you may want to switch between 2D and 3D.

Line Colour and Width from SketchUp to SVG

November 11th, 2009

darth-svg

When exporting SVG from SketchUp, I found that I wanted to set default line colours and thicknesses from within SketchUp, so that I didn’t have to change them from within my SVG editor.

Annotations from SketchUp to SVG

November 10th, 2009

Laserscript Font

One of the problems when creating a 2D cutting layout from a 3D model is that it is hard to keep track of pieces and remember how they fit together. I thought that a good way to address the problem would be to take SketchUp text annotations and convert them into SVG text or shapes, so I added this to my SVG plugin.

2D Layout and BOM Complete

September 11th, 2009

CNC with Butterfly Wings Parts Layout

I have finally pulled my CNC model apart piece by piece in SketchUp and constructed a Bill of Materials (BOM). Now I am finally ready to start exporting to SVG. The first change that I’ll be making to the code is a way to carry SketchUp annotations through to a SVG document. I realised that I needed this functionality when I looked at my parts and noticed that some are quite hard to tell apart. I also need a way to link the BOM, 3D model, assembly instructions, and laser cut parts by using identifiers etched into the parts.

Why there will be some SVG plugin updates soon…

August 26th, 2009

CNC with Butterfly Wings V5 (SketchUp)

The reason that I’ve spent a bit of time updating my SVG exporter for SketchUp is the new project that I’ve been working on. The sketchup model below has taken me about two months (of nights) to complete and about five revisions. The laser cutting project is ready to move to the 2D layout phase and I still have some functionality to add to my plugin code.

SVG Plugin Updated

August 17th, 2009
Horsey!

Horsey!

Just a quick note that a couple of bugs have been fixed in the SVG exporter plugin for Google SketchUp (now at v0.92). Thanks to Otto who noticed that some dissecting lines weren’t being exported (I’ve fixed that now…). See Otto’s plywood chess set on the Make Flickr Pool and Thingiverse.

SVG Export Plugin for SketchUp (Ver. 0.9)

July 29th, 2009

thumbA year on and I have finally released a new version of my open source SVG exporter for SketchUp. There are a few key features which have been added to make CNC routing and laser cutting a bit easier using this method:

  • Tested with Google SketchUp 7
  • Exporting of either SVG “lines” or “paths”
  • SVG groups are created based on faces

Grouping occurs if co-planar faces share an edge (i.e. if two faces are joined and are flat)

  • You can choose to export or ignore dissecting lines (i.e. the shared edges of the previous point)
  • You can choose to export or ignore orphan lines (i.e. a line that is on a face, but does not dissect the face)
  • Hidden geometry can be exported or ignored
  • Preferences for SVG exporting will be saved when saving a SketchUp file

To learn more about how to use the plugin and understand the features above, read on after the link.

Download the plugin from here…

“iHandstand” iPod Nano Holder – Open Design

June 16th, 2009

iHandstand AC/DC

I don’t know why I didn’t make this design available a long time ago, but I just remembered I was hanging onto it when I could have been sharing it. I usually watch my iPod at night while I’m sitting in bed – the problem is having to hold the iPod out in front of my face. I thought that it would be nice to have some helping hands, so I designed some. This is my design for a landscape iPod nano “hand” holder – hence the cheesy “i” prefix to the name.

Once upon a time I was going to bash out a few different designs for other handhelds, and I even got as far as one for the iPhone (although an early prototype with a couple of bugs). I was even going to sell the holders, but they require a bit of work to put together (see the video when you “read more”) and they aren’t that customisable apart from colour choice. I also have too many flights-of-ideas to make a success from such a venture. That’s why I’m throwing the design out into the interwebby in the hope that someone will find it interesting or useful.

If you’re interested in other designs, then head here…

SMD Herbs and Spices

May 20th, 2009

SMD Herbs and Spices

Putting together the electronics for my RepRap has required some reflow soldering in order to use SMDs (Surface Mount Devices). This was my first attempt at reflow soldering, and I found that you don’t necessarily need expensive equipment to get a good result. In fact it’s quite feasible to use a frying pan (skillet) on an electric stove top… although I would say to proceed at you own risk in regards to safety and property damage ;-P
